There is hardly a time where I am at a loss for words, but describing the Leader Advancement Scholarship (LAS), offered by Central Michigan University, renders me speechless! LAS was the one deciding factor in my attendance at CMU and I wasn’t even all that sure of what I was getting myself into, I realize now why no one was capable of effectively explaining the scholarship to me. Being a part of the Leader Advancement Scholar cohort is one of the best things that has happened to me and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to participate in all that having the scholarship entails. Despite the fact that I could not be happier to be called an LASer I still don’t think I could effectively communicate to anyone what the experience is like, at least without sounding like the corniest Hallmark card writer in the world. The people I have met and friends I have made through this scholarship are not only changing my life right now, but I predict will continue to do so in the future as well.
Part of the Leader Advancement Scholarship is that each incoming freshman is paired with a sophomore mentor who in turn has a junior mentor and so on and so forth until soon you feel as though you’ve just gained a whole family of amazing people. My incredibly helpful and sweet mentor’s name is Mike Snider! I’ve lost count of all the ways he has helped me in my attempt to adjust to life as a college student this first semester. He has certainly made my CMU experience unique and my transition here smoother. Mike’s mentor, whom I call my grand-mentor, is the one and only Gary Williams! I am very lucky to be able to say that Gary lives in the same hall as me and has been nothing but open to helping me whenever I need it. I feel so blessed to call both him and Mike my good friends, college would not be the same without them! On top of that, I have the privilege of saying that I have met my great-grand-mentor Hillary! She is such a fun and easy-going person, I simply love her! Her advice and humor has also helped me on multiple occasions and I know that without LAS I would not have the privilege of knowing her.
Aside from the fact that LAS harbors some of the most influential people I have ever and possibly will ever meet, its curriculum and scholarship requirements have pushed me to realize many things about myself that I would otherwise not have had the chance to discover. I am so appreciative of that and also very excited to continue my journey with the Leader Advancement Scholar cohort here at Central Michigan University.
