Deed #30: Adopt a Soldier

This week I adopted a U.S Platoon/Military Unit through the Adopt A US Soldier website. I joined their Project Frontlines movement which gave me a platoon/unit of our military to write letters to. This portion of the Adopt A Soldier program is meant to be short-term and caters to a large group of military personnel. I am currently composing letters to send to them and working on creating a box of goodies to send as a care package as well. 🙂

This is a unique experience for me because I have never been a fan of the United States military simply because I very much dislike the idea of war entirely. I have never been able to understand why we can’t just use peace treaties for everything or even just leave other countries alone and be peaceful, in fact why can’t every country work together to create one happy planet… I will never know and now I sound like a flighty headed dreamer, but those are my views and for the most part I stick to them. That being said I would like to add that while I disagree with the idea of war and the fact that we as a country are sending our own people out to fight, I respect the work that our soldiers do and I am so incredibly thankful for the freedoms they have sacrificed so much to give me! I wish these freedoms had been obtained in a different fashion, but I am no less grateful for them!

I also would like to add that I just learned this year that every man upon turning 18 must sign up for the draft. This scares me like crazy and hits home even harder now that I have met friends who participate heavily in the ROTC program at Central Michigan University. The idea of losing any one of them to war tears my heart in two.

Needless to say, I am excited to offer a shred of positivity and love to a soldier or two! I only hope that it can bring a smile to their face for at least a moment.
